“The home is a colorful coastal retreat with a contemporary yet casual mood offering an open invitation for a restful refuge.” This was the inspiration for the remodel design of this Naples’ Little Harbour home by Jett Segal of Jett & Company Interior Design. The European-influenced exterior, with its curved and steep roof lines conveys a charming reflection of the homeowners’ passion for travel, entertaining and their large extended family. “This is where life’s cares slip away and the soul is restored” remarks Segal.
This sentiment is felt immediately upon entering the open design of the foyer, which allows plenty of room to drop suitcases and greet guests. A coastal contemporary style, blending comfort and elegance, is established here and then carries throughout the entire home. Driftwood colored walls and polished Skyline marble floors were hand selected for their resemblance to sand and sea. A natural hemp runner climbs a cocoa stained stairway with railings that curve outward like welcoming arms. Overlooking the stairway is a charming port-like oval window, capped by an arched alcove ceiling.
“The great room presented an interesting design challenge,” reveals Segal. The homeowners were very specific in their desire to maximize the open space to allow for either formal entertaining or casual family relaxation. “I loved this challenge. It gave me the opportunity to custom design a pair of Asian inspired sliding door panels that serve a dual purpose, one to mask the television when not in use and two to be a dynamic art wall,” explains Segal. Ruffino Cabinetry built the doors according to Segal’s specifications.
The coquina stone fireplace flanking the opposite side of the great room further enhances the room’s versatility. Showcased above the mantle is a six panel study of a water lily which influences the vibrant and botanical accents in the décor. A pair of oversized cobalt blue table lamps coupled with the contemporary cut crystal chandelier brings a sparkle of elegance and formality. Ahmad Mirziai, founder of Azar Fine Rugs, explains that the great room’s area rug is their own Le Roy design, hand knotted in Kathmandu using New Zealand wool with a raised motif of fine Chinese silk. Mirziai, who provided multiple area rugs for the home, comments, “Each room is uniquely different, while maintaining a cohesive feel throughout the home.”
The homeowners enlisted Wyman Stokes Builders to make considerable renovations to the home. The home’s original kitchen area was redesigned by Segal from a confined enclosed working space to a fully open all-inclusive kitchen, dining room and morning room, the perfect perch for family to gather around the hearth of the home. United Materials Incorporated (UMI) supplied the island’s Magic Brown granite in a leather finish. The polished Nacarado granite that lines the perimeter countertop, back splash and window surround of the kitchen contrasts gently with the Shell Reef brushed limestone tiles. “The limestone was hand-picked to be full of embedded seashells,” states Jimmy Watts of UMI, who provided most of the stone in the home. “We assisted in the selection of the highest quality stone surfaces throughout this project to ensure that each floor and surface is unique and stylish.”
The custom cabinetry, designed by Jett & Company and built by Ruffino Cabinetry to secret away all of the kitchen miscellany are accented with exotic Macassar wood banding and oversized organic shaped polished chrome cabinet bar pulls. Displayed above are the homeowners’ personal collection of colorful hand-painted Del Carmen dishware from Mexico. The center island allows for two natural woven bars tools to be easily tucked out of the way.
The dining room space design plays upon a combination of contemporary and old world flavors. Six modern chairs upholstered in a textured parakeet green fabric and illuminated by a custom designed drum pendant fixture surround a wood table with a driftwood patina finish, intended for a casual feel. Hand-painted styled fabric for the window treatments depict vibrant tropical flowers in a batik-like pattern. Here, an accent wall of the same coral color bamboo grass cloth seen on the kitchen cabinetry frames an original painting by the homeowner, created specifically for this space.
A bold ensemble of lively white, fuchsia peony pinks and sassafras green, reminiscent of Lilly Pulitzer, ensures that visitors to the main guest suite are given an immediate reminder that they are in the beautiful tropics of Southwest Florida. Silk draperies with embroidered orchid patterns from Osborne & Little frame the views of the pool and lush green landscape beyond. The tall upholstered bed is complimented with a matching custom designed bench, exquisite bedding and the whimsical colored block print of a pink peacock and oversized silver seashells add delight to the room.
The warm, welcoming environment of the home extends outward to encompass a fully accommodating lanai, including a pool and complete outdoor kitchen. An architectural crescent of standing columns presents the perfect space for the family to gather around a fire pit with a seating group of cushioned rockers upholstered in a Moroccan mosaic pattern outdoor fabric of aquamarine, indigo and parakeet green. Turquoise ceramic garden seats add a tropical flair and versatility to the design, acting as either tables or extra seating for entertaining family and friends.
This home is carefully crafted to be both modern, colorful and elegant, while allowing for the ease and comfort that one associates with a vacation retreat. When asked what to call this design, Segal replies, “Effortlessly elegant.”
