Island Inspiration : Award-Winning West Indies Design

Symmetrical yet inviting, sophisticated yet warm and casual, The Victoria model designed and built by John Cannon Homes surrounds you with trademark touches of its island-inspired West Indies design.

Underfoot, dark wide-planked solid hardwood floors topped with light-toned area rugs in natural fabrics emphasize the classic play of dark and light that is characteristic of West Indies décor. A resort-style pool and spa with water features offers a sparkling welcome. An airy gallery leads to four spacious bedrooms, four full- and one half-baths and his-and-hers studies. In the great room, a soaring double-vaulted, cabana-style ceiling of glossy white tongue-and-groove paneling accented by dark-stained wood beams transports you to the tropics.

“We captured the essence of traditional West Indies design while adding the John Cannon Homes modern flair,” explains builder John Cannon. “Throughout the home, we combined timeless features such as the coffered ceiling in the master bedroom, with current trends like the waterfall-edge quartz countertop at the kitchen island. We also added a separate executive suite which includes a fully equipped morning bar, dining nook, inviting living space, sleeping quarters, and lavish bathroom. Wrapping windows and a private French door entry from the front porch create all the benefits of a guesthouse.”

The Victoria’s extensive outdoor living spaces add more than 1,600 square feet to the home’s generous 5,193 square feet of living area. The resort lifestyle they embody resonates with Cannon and interior designer Roy Davis. The large open kitchen with the oversized waterfall island is also one of Davis’ favorite features.

New technology has its place in the home as well. A digitally-controlled, multi-function, chromo-therapy, walk-in master bath shower and a temperature-controlled wine room are just two examples. The flawless execution of design and function earned The Victoria a “Best Overall” honor in the Manatee-Sarasota Building Industry Association’s 2017 Parade of Homes, one of four such awards bestowed on the John Cannon team.

According to Cannon, The Victoria is popular with a wide range of clientele, from young professionals to retirees, primary homebuyers, or those building a second home.

Bahama-style shutters, decorative corbels, and dramatic trim work embellishing the three gables are the first indicators that a British West Indies vibe heavily influences The Victoria design. The home’s symmetry begins here as well, with a triple-arch entry spanning two wings of the home presenting identical exterior features. A side-loading garage features doors from D & D Garage Doors. Twin monuments on each side of the approach set the boundaries of the lushly planted gray paver courtyard.

An oil-rubbed bronze 12-arm Morrison chandelier from LyteWorks illuminates the great room. A pair of Noir Comles sideboards in a white weathered finish, flanks the gas fireplace where a French antique dark wood-framed mirror balances on the mantel. Two sets of botanical prints complete the symmetrical composition. A pair of Rowe wingback chairs covered in teal chenille fabric with nail-head trim faces a Ballard Designs linen daybed across an oversized square wooden cocktail table. Plump throw pillows in fabrics from Vervain, Robert Allen, and Duralee splash color onto the Rowe linen-covered sofa. A pair of small benches placed in front of the fireplace, completes the seating group, which is anchored by a tone-on-tone braided, patterned rug.

A quartet of wingback dining chairs upholstered in creamy linen and sporting nail- head trim, are matched with a complementary set of four Easton side chairs in cappuccino finish with linen seats providing ample seating around the Morrison pedestal table in a distressed gray finish. An antique French metal-grid mirror backs the alcove housing a California credenza from Universal. A patterned sisal rug defines the dining area. The chandelier in sterling gold with crystal glass accents, lights up the room.

Central to the kitchen is a step-up-style island, offering two functional workspaces—one for food preparation and the other for counter-height dining. The bar stools with dark stain and caned backs add West Indies flair. Above the island, nostalgic Edison bulbs gleam in a three-light bronze and brass chandelier from LyteWorks. Custom sable-glazed maple cabinets house the refrigerator, and a china collection sparkles behind lighted glass-front doors. More custom cabinets, in stained maple with a dark glaze, surround a Miele wall oven and convection microwave from Monark Premium Appliance Co. Oversized 3-by-12-inch glazed ceramic tiles, staggered in a subway pattern, comprise the backsplash. The countertops and island tops are upgraded 4-inch thick Silestone in Tigris Sand from Distinctive Surfaces.

A nine-light, two-tiered, polished nickel Crystorama Mirage chandelier hangs from the framed box-beam ceiling in the master bedroom. The upholstered bed is dressed with a Kravet duvet cover and accent pillows in shades of cool blues. A tufted bench on a black base is set at the foot of the bed. Two-toned Hooker aluminum and black three-drawer chests serve as nightstands, their dark accents blending with the molasses finish on the dresser. Above the dresser glimmers an Uttermost Kiowa mirror with forged-iron frame featuring deep, crisp waves finished with antiqued gold-leaf. Inverted pleat draperies of large scale printed Stroheim fabric in muted tones grace the windows and a creamy white, sculptured wool area rug grounds the room.

A freestanding Kohler tub is central to the indoor-outdoor feature of the master bath. A privacy wall with tiled trough water feature is both functional and decorative. One-inch square Lunada Bay mosaic agate tiles in pearl-finished Cortona line the walk-in shower and compose a visual rug set into the limestone floor by Distinctive Surfaces. The painted wood vanities are topped with Yukon Silestone in champagne, also from Distinctive Surfaces. Polished nickel sconces with linen shades hang alongside a triple-framed mirror with silver detail. The amber glass beads of the Birkdale eight-arm chandelier in sterling gold finish sparkle warmly in the center of the room.

The Cannon team designed a unique grillwork accenting the glass insets of the barn doors to impart a West Indies vibe to the study. Sherwin-Williams Van Dyke Brown gives the room a warm glow. Built-in cabinets painted a darker brown create a niche where an oversized abstract canvas in a floating frame is from Leftbank Art. The mahogany Noir QS Portuguese desk features a hand-rubbed black wax-finish, which accents the intricate carving on the apron and legs. A pair of Robin Bruce rounded-back wing chairs is tucked into the room’s corners. The six-light, Elk Hemisphere chandelier is finished in polished nickel.

The West Indies-style woven, dark wood-beam ceiling tops pale white walls in the bonus room. A similar contrast is found on the limestone floor topped with a sisal area rug. The patterned draperies provide more light and dark pairing. A Hinkley Fulton light fixture with aged-zinc finish hangs above the 8-foot pool table. Sturdy mocha-hued twill covers the sofa. A trio of copper-topped nesting tables is tucked between chairs covered in cool, blue linen and accented with aqua-blue velvet pillows. Metal-capped brass legs and a burled-wood top distinguish the cocktail table. The Universal Delancy credenza in a brownstone finish with polished nickel hardware, provides plenty of stylish storage.

Two pairs of weather-resistant teak chaises invite relaxation. Brilliant aqua lumbar pillows offer colorful support. An eclectic collection of outdoor seating surrounds the elevated fire pit in the covered gazebo. Outdoor furnishings include daybeds under the main lanai. The Victoria offers a bonus lanai, with a full outdoor kitchen, dining and seating areas.
