This five-bedroom 4,800-square-foot Anna Maria Island beach house is the result of a close collaboration by Lee Ross of Ross Built Construction and interior designer Lisa M. Guild of LMG Design. Two things about the home are especially striking. One is the coastal color palette; the other is the creative use of divergent, yet harmonious materials.
“It’s right on Holmes Beach, with amazing ocean views,” says Guild, when speaking of the home’s first distinguishing feature. “The decorating palette comes from what’s right outside: the driftwood, the sand, the different colors of the water, as it recedes and gets deeper,” she says of the browns, grays, blues, and sea-foam greens used throughout. By contrast, the trim work and shaker-style cabinetry are mostly crisp white.
The second standout statement is the liberal use of rich, diverse, textural materials, such as hand-poured Italian kitchen tiles, distressed pine floors, cypress ceiling beams, porcelain tile work, black marble, a flagstone hearth, and more.
Nowhere is the material interplay more apparent than in the foyer. “The turret entry to the home is a key feature,” shares Ross of the hexagonal foyer, with porcelain tile floors and a hexagonal wood ceiling medallion. “It’s a unique three-story-high space, with the stairs hugging the wall and floating all the way up.”
“Though the palette is consistent, tying all the spaces together, we created visual interest using different materials or different approaches with the same material,” says Guild. For example, the kitchen has hand-poured Italian tile as a backsplash in a herringbone pattern on the stove wall and in a bricked pattern on the sink wall.
The kitchen also has a huge stainless-steel-topped island that seats up to eight. “The homeowners love to cook. They have large family gatherings in the summer, with lots of kids and grandkids, who range from very young to college-age, so the great room was really designed to be the heart of the house,” adds Ross.
Lush landscaping including varietal palm trees and fuchsia bougainvillea surrounds the front driveway of the coastal shingle-style house designed by Ross Built. The home fans out on the lot, with dual D & D Garage Doors to the left. The natural drive is a prelude to the textural experience inside.
The dramatic three-story foyer has a Napa Home large hexagonal driftwood finish table which mimics the ceiling medallion in shape. Two Vanguard ottomans in a robin’s egg blue plaid fabric, with silver nail-head trim are from International Design Source. The breakfront cabinet, also in a driftwood finish, belonged to the homeowners and contains their collection of sand and shells from beaches visited over the years. A dramatic shell-and-iron chandelier hangs is one of many inspiring light fixtures in similar materials scattered throughout the home.
In the great room, a custom-designed stone fireplace defines the living area. The casual comfy sofas are upholstered in treated white canvas slipcovers for easy removal and maintenance. Additional seating includes a pair of cottage blue benches with Walfab fabric. The area rug is from LMG. The round coffee table is made of hardy travertine, both the top and the base, and is from Global Views. Sliding glass doors open up onto an adjacent porch furnished by Elegant Outdoor Living, creating one large open space for entertaining.
The breakfast nook furniture, including a pedestal table in a driftwood finish and slatted chairs, belonged to the homeowners. The niche has a spectacular Marsh Grasses hand-painted iron chandelier, with crystal drops, through LMG. Tabletop dishes are from Vietri and the custom roman shades are in a Blue Haze fabric, also through LMG.
The kitchen has a farmhouse apron sink and custom inset Shaker-style cabinetry with rustic Emtek iron hardware. The oiled soapstone counters with a steel-topped island is custom-designed by Ross Built. Hand-poured Italian tile is shown on the stove and bar backsplashes.
The master bedroom headboard wall is covered in a Phillip Jeffries textured wall covering. The custom multi-tiered shell chandelier, with wrought iron frame, is from LMG, as are the iron, wall-mounted, swing-arm lamps. The bedside tables and bed were part of the homeowner’s existing collection. The Braxton Culler slip-covered swivel chair in aqua beach umbrella stripe is from International Design Source. Curtain sheers are by Magnolia Fabrics in Arly Snow.
The master bathroom features Karya Royal marble illuminated by a Currey & Co. light fixture. The vanity bench is by Manor House in Driftwood Finish Fabric with Mint welting in Café from International Design Source.
The rear exterior is beautifully planned for maximizing outdoors and beachfront living, with extensive covered porches, as well as open areas for sunning, and swimming. The outside furniture was acquired through Elegant Outdoor Living. The seating on the balconies has gray teak frames, with mineral blue outdoors cushions. Chaises on the pool deck feature the same mineral blue. Accent pillows are in a fretwork pattern in a pewter hue. Umbrellas feature Sunbrella Dupione Celeste fabric.
