BREAKING THE RULES AND CREATING THE UNEXPECTED
Breaking the rules and creating the unexpected is what homeowner Ann Cowherd set out to do in this one-of-a-kind Florida vacation home. From the moment you arrive at the doorstep, the attention to detail and the whimsical nature of this residence are apparent. A hot pink doorbell and house numbers serve as an introduction to the playful design throughout.
After drawing her vision for the home on a cocktail napkin, Ann knew that the most important task would be finding the right people to help her build it. She has remodeled and decorated eight other homes in her lifetime, but this is the first one she built from the ground up. With great thought and care, Ann requested the services of BUILD and MHK Architecture & Planning. “My builder was amazing,” says Ann. “The project manager just got me. He really understood my vision and always found ways to improve upon my ideas and bring them to life.” One of the strategic advantages of working with BUILD is the experience that comes from their vast and successful commercial background. BUILD’s ability to approach challenges from different perspectives and present unique solutions and techniques not typically available in the residential market are applauded by their luxury home clients.
The exterior of the home shares elements of traditional and modern architecture. “This was an exciting challenge because our goal was to meld two distinctive styles in order to create a unique design that was still contextual,” explains Matthew Kragh, owner of MHK Architecture & Planning. The use of horizontal lines is a contemporary nod, while the traditional roof forms keep everything in balance with the style of the area’s surrounding homes.
A beautiful stacked stone feature wall leads you all the way from outside the front door, through the foyer, into the great room, and out to the lanai. “It is the spine of the house,” explains Kragh. “The entire home unfolds around the wall.” It is a unifying detail that ties all elements of the home together, and sets the tone for the entire space. “The cantilever staircase is one my favorite details in this home,” expresses Steven Jallad of MHK Architecture & Planning. “I really appreciate the way it enhances the beauty of the stacked stone wall.”
Creating the feature wall was no small task. The material for this treatment typically comes in prefabricated sheets, but the team at BUILD knew that on this large scale, the sheets would show a distinctive pattern and seam that would take away from the overall impact. “We found a mason that would take the segmented stone system and install it piece by piece to avoid any noticeable patterns,” shares Jay Howard, Principal of BUILD. This extra effort and attention to detail is how Ann’s vision was brought to life with such success.
Executed brilliantly in every inch of the home, Ann chose a color palette of hot pink and turquoise to combine with neutrals. These brilliant pops of color are thoughtfully and strategically placed throughout the space in such a way that it seems effortless and organic. “I went for a look that is edgy, rocker chic, and sophisticated,” explains Ann. All of the little details that shape the space are truly a reflection of her personal style and adventurous spirit. The coffee table is available in custom sizes and finishes through the Bay Design Store in Naples. “This is the perfect cocktail table for any setting,” says Bay Design Store owner Susan Bay. “Whether your style is traditional or contemporary this table nestles in with any look.”
The contemporary abstract artwork featured over the fire place is a vibrant giclee, gallery wrapped on canvas, with a high gloss finish encased in a white frame. This artwork and comparable others can be viewed in Wilson Lighting’s art showcase gallery. “Ann likes to have some edginess and unexpected elements such as the skull cowhide pillows and the industrial metal framed mirror in the dining area,” describes Dana Roeser, Ann’s sister and President of Dana Roeser Interior Design.
The kitchen is extremely clean and innovative. At first glance you get a sense of how open it feels, and you will note that there is a generous amount of counter space. After further investigation you will notice that all of the appliances seem to be missing! Don’t be fooled, they are all there; this is yet another one of Ann’s brilliant ideas. “One of my favorite features of this home is the unique butler’s pantry,” explains Howard. “All of the bulky appliances and space wasters are tucked away where they are easy to utilize without being in sight.”
On the second level of the home, a well-thought-out and youthful bunkroom is a place where four of the Cowherd’s six children can rest their heads and spend quality time in a space of their own. “We did not want the home to be a “typical” Florida home in its design and decor, and I think we achieved that beautifully,” expresses Roeser, whose expert knowledge and design experience were a tremendous help to her sister throughout the process. “I don’t imagine there is another home in the area that has a bunk room with turquoise stained wood floors!” The space is fully equipped with a lounging area, activity space, and a private balcony. Following suit with the rest of the home, the attention to detail in this room is incredible. Every bunk has its own outlet with USB port, and a full wet bar is just around the corner where the children can keep drinks and snacks for their convenience.
The lanai offers many opportunities for private conversations or large gatherings with a number of seating areas and a spiral staircase up to a private balcony. Horizontal wood floor panels define unique spaces and mimic the linear forms found throughout the home. The wood inlays are a refreshing deviation from the usual expanse of concrete that is typical of most outdoor spaces in the area. The material used is Ipe, which reduces the heat, glare, and increases the softness and intimacy of the space. A final nod to the color scheme is presented in the form of a pink and turquoise mosaic tile that covers the hot tub and accents the perimeter of the pool.
The Cowherds wanted to create a place that was fun and sexy, as well as family friendly. Their use of space and the playful nature of their design create an atmosphere that can be enjoyed by children and adults alike. “This home offers so many different experiences,” states homeowner and ESPN celebrity Colin Cowherd. “We’ve created a place where we can entertain and let loose with our friends, as well as spend quality time with our family.”
