A CONTEMPORARY HIGH-RISE RENOVATION
What started as a simple renovation quickly turned into an extensive renovation when homeowners took on the task of turning their condo into a modern and refined space. Wanting to be closer to their daughter and grandchildren, these homeowners referred to ideas they have been collecting throughout the years to design this luxurious home.
When forming the design concept, the homeowners wanted to ensure that the home had a continuous flow while still focusing on individuality. “Every area has its own personality,” states Liliana Allen of Oracle Surfaces. From lighting to furnishings, it is important that the pieces are fresh and items that have not been seen before. They traveled from Tampa to Miami in search of the perfect furnishings, rugs, and light fixtures to create a look that was understated yet opulent.
Walking off the elevator, you are welcomed into an impressive living room that radiates the homeowner’s desire for a fresh design. Sleek cream-colored leather sofas and chairs surround a glass and metal cocktail table while the dynamic starburst rug adds a pop of color. Petrified wood end tables add an organic element to the room and complement the dramatic wall feature. A mix of wood paneling and porcelain stone-inspired tile flanked by custom designed wall sconces make a powerful statement in the room. A circular dropped ceiling offers a unique architectural element without being obtrusive. Floor-to-ceiling windows allow natural light to flood the room while giving a panoramic view of the bay.
When selecting the flooring material, the homeowners wanted to keep a clean, monochromatic look throughout. They worked closely with Oracle Surfaces to create this minimalistic look. Ultimately, Allen and the homeowners decided upon “French Vanilla Shadow.” This 24” square Italian marble tile gives the condo an updated look. These larger tiles create a neutral palette that emulates the modest, fresh look the homeowners were trying to achieve. “The approach was to be very minimalistic,” says Allen.
The creation of an open floor plan played a major role in the overall design of this home. Working closely with their contractor, the homeowners removed walls and completely redesigned the kitchen to give the condo an open and inviting feel. Removing upper cabinets above the bar was the first step in making the kitchen larger for entertaining. Allen worked closely with the homeowners to select the perfect materials for the kitchen, introducing them to a wide range of products. “The kitchen backsplash features a new line of product,” explains Allen. This waved patterned tile with an iridescent finish reflects the light to create a textural look, making it the perfect complement to the dimensional metallic tile mosaic featured on the bar face.
The rich, dark wood cabinets give warmth to the room and the lustrous “Taj Mahal” quartz countertop provide an interesting contrast to the space. An understated stainless steel arch pendant above the island accentuates the Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances, polishing off this decadent kitchen.
Ceiling treatments and lighting contribute heavily to the design of this home. With the open floor plan, it was important to the homeowners that each space still be clearly defined. Through a mixture of cleverly designed ceiling treatments, the homeowners have created distinctive spaces without taking away from the openness of the home.
The dining room ceiling mirrors the chic, straight lines of the dining table while upholstered dining chairs add softness to the space. Adding a sense of whimsy to the room is a custom-made Dale Chihuly chandelier, a handcrafted piece consisting of 118 individual pieces of glass. This impressive statement piece took installers 3 days to hang as each piece of glass had to be layered by hand. The use of floor-to-ceiling windows and generously sized sliding glass doors bring in a plentiful amount of light.
When designing the master bedroom the homeowners had very clear ideas of what they wanted to achieve with this space. The crystal hanging pendants on either side of the headboard were important in this design and required some creativity from the contractor. In order to incorporate this look, it was necessary for the ceiling to be dropped in the room to allow space for extra wiring. This luxurious space features a custom made floor-to-ceiling upholstered headboard flanked by two striking metallic night stands. The abstract floral rug adds color to the room and pull in the daring pattern of the zebra print armchairs.
The master bathroom is one area where Allen’s creativity shines. The homeowner requested a freestanding tub on a stone platform and together with Allen they created a wonderfully unique area. This waterfall design displayed behind the tub uses a mixture of marble and pebbles to form a lively focal point with a very organic feel. A unique wire and metal chandelier give the room a subtle touch of elegance.
The expansive lanai area creates a lavish entertaining space, allowing the homeowners to create three different seating areas, all of which take advantage of the view of the bay. Clean-lined furniture with a neutral color palette complement the interior of the home and produce a consistent look. Breaking away from the large square tiles used throughout the interior, homeowners opted for a 12”x24” porcelain tile to create a linear feel. From the inspired tile designs to the spectacular custom chandeliers, this home brings to life a soft contemporary look that radiates sophistication.
