Move over Honeysuckle. Your sweet gentle tones got kicked to the curb as the prestigious Pantone Color Institute gave a shout out to Tangerine as the color of the year for 2012.
Known as Pantone 17-463 among members of the interior design community, the color’s formal name is “Tangerine Tango” and it stirs up all the excitement and racing pulses of the sexy Argentinian dance from which it takes its name.
Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute, Leatrice Eiseman, describes the hue as “orange with a lot of depth to it…reminiscent of the radiant shadings of a sunset”, but other designers have called it a “provocative go-getter”, “a vivacious, enticing hue” and both “dramatic” and “seductive.”
This hot-hot-hot color, with spicy hints of tamale coupled with the butter yellow of the Florida sun, insists that we throw off the blues of last year and the blahs of winter (such as it was) and race into spring with energy and passion.
Local designers incorporate this blazing hue in small pops of color (throw pillows, accent bedding, home accessories) or kick it up a notch by painting a kitchen or hallway wall with the shade. Want everyone to feel the heat the second they step foot in your home? Paint the entryway and watch the energy level zoom.
Add some zest to your kitchen with tangerine-colored small appliances (or go all out and choose tangerine quartz for your countertops). A vase of Bird’s of Paradise adds a tropical punch to the bath and Tangerine draperies frame the glorious view of sunrise on the Gulf.
Fashion designers like Tommy Hilfiger, Nanette Lepore, Cynthia Steffe by Shaun Kearney, Elie Tahari and Adrienne Vittadini, are taking Tangerine and running with it in their Spring fashions and Pantone even paired with Sephora, to create a history-making collection of Tangerine-inspired eye shadow, lipstick, lip gloss, nail polish and accessories (hitting stores in March). With home accessory manufacturer’s jumping on board the color train, bland is officially banished. From coffee mugs to mixers tangerine is a color not to be denied.
Bring a bit of the islands to your home, Mon. Don’t be afraid to shake off the safe and let loose with a Tangerine Dream of your own.
