Overlooking Wiggins Pass and the Gulf of Mexico, the interior design of this model unit in the highly anticipated Kalea Bay towers, pushes past the usual ocean hues to more rustic and neutral colors reminiscent of sand and driftwoods.
Elegantly staying ahead of the trends, Renee Gaddis, owner and principal of Renee Gaddis Interiors, looks at each project as an opportunity to create, “In this model I wanted something that would appeal to people older and younger,” notes Gaddis, adding, “We were able to execute this with the juxtaposition of accessories that appear to be gathered through years of travel and with the use of modern printed fabrics and wallcovering.”
“Most developers hire designers and then oversee every detail,” explains Inga Wilson, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Kalea Bay. “We know Renee so well that we trust everything she does will be fabulous and different than anything we’ve seen in Naples… and she did it again.”
Unlike most condominiums, the highest-end finishes are standard in the Kalea Bay units. Buyers are given color choices in quartz countertops and wood floors, and all units come with Wolf/Sub-Zero Appliances, Downsview cabinetry, and Rohl fixtures. In order to feature the luxurious quality, Gaddis utilized the finishes that would be delivered standard with the unit. “The best part about working with standards is being able to show our clients all the unusual and creative things that can be accomplished through basic selections that will set their home apart from the rest,” she explains.
The expansive open floor plan, designed with the contemporary buyer in mind, required distinct ceiling details to create intimacy. Gaddis, an expert in realizing flexible, multi-generational social spaces, selected a two sided couch, modular nesting tables, benches with castors, swivel seats, even a rocking chair, so that the great room can just as easily entertain a family with young children as it can host a sophisticated dinner party.
Various woods are featured throughout the unit, softened by whites and grays in a mixture of textures in each room. The wood floors climb the walls of the bedroom; cerused wood built-ins offer generous open storage or fixed seating, and painted or varnished reclaimed wood is the base of several tables.
Gaddis collaborated with Woodworkers Cabinet of Naples to design custom shelving and banquette seating for the living room, and used an Obeche wood in the den shelving that is sustainable and unique, each element contributing to a highly memorable, progressive, and desirable design. “The rustic look was in advance of any demand,” notes Gaddis. “After seeing this model unit I’ve had a lot of requests from clients for something similar.”
The large sand colored, double-sided linen sofa is the centerpiece of the great room. Reclaimed wood stools are dipped in white, and linen swivel chairs hold charcoal and cream striated pillows that complement the metal framed club chairs in the same material. All furniture is custom or sourced by Renee Gaddis Interiors. The shelves and floating console framing the television were custom built in cerused wood and enhance the Legno Bastone Wide Plank Wood Flooring professionally installed by Naples Flooring.
The kitchen is a mix of grays and metals with bronze and black hanging pendants from Visual Comfort, stainless steel Wolf/Sub- Zero appliances from Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery, and gold hardware on the dove gray cabinets from Elite Cabinetry. The upholstered stools have a woven base and are lined with brass nail-heads. The full height backsplash is Calcutta slab and is bookmatched and flush with the Santa Margherita quartz countertops.
Rather than a formal dining area, a casual breakfast table is located just off the kitchen. The custom-crafted banquette seating and lighted shelves are in the same cerused wood used in the great room. The table is custom glass atop painted reclaimed wood with long skirted woven rattan chairs. Sheer curtains in a soft wave pattern finish the windows without obstructing the view.
The home features Legno Bastone Wide Plank Flooring in Frachino from the La Famiglia collection. Gaddis envisioned the ceiling design of tongue-and-groove in the same finish as the flooring, adding three beams with recessed lighting which lead to the terrace. The wood floors rise to the left and right of a custom-built, creamy linen, tufted headboard. An oversized chair with curved wings sits off to the side, and the coordinating night stands and dresser are designed by Renee Gaddis Interiors.
The master bath floors are Todagres Spanish porcelain tile lined with a mosaic. An MTI custom acrylic tub from Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery sits beside a dark bronze metal stool. The room is framed by his-and-hers Downsview cabinetry in a gray finish from Elite Cabinetry, above which is a wrought iron mirror with spiked edges and matching bronze-based, glass-topped sconces. Dual entrances lead to a walk-in dressing room and closet designed by Inspired Closets.
Gaddis differentiated the additional bedrooms from the master with darker, more masculine tones. In this guest bedroom, a custom upholstered bed with side wings has a charcoal center complementing the shimmery metallic ceiling. A textured grass cloth wall covering leads down the hallway to a sliding barn door entrance, and a darker charcoal rug keeps the gravity. Hanging shaded interior pendants inside woven rope illuminate with a soft glow while adding a strong sculptural presence.
A variety of wall coverings and dark accessories bring serious drama to this powder room, including a textured faux-brick wall-covering on the vanity wall, and stormy clouds with a stenciled look on the abutting wall. The wrought iron mirror is flanked by twin Tory Lighting wrought iron baton-shaped sconces with globe bulbs at either end. A custom-built privacy screen is painted a glossy gray.
The fourth bedroom is converted to a multi-use space to serve as both a den and an office, with walls covered in chevron-patterned grass cloth. A built-in floating desk sits in front of a cabinet made of wire-brushed obeche wood. The sectional with chaise and love seat is custom by Renee Gaddis Interiors. The coffee table is a unique tree trunk with stainless feet atop a zebra skin rug.
Kalea Bay lanais boast twice the square footage of most condominiums. The enormous U-shaped sectional has a terrycloth feel and custom outdoor pillows. The white concrete dining table sits atop teak pedestals and is surrounded by woven rope chairs with teak frames. The large teak-framed mirror is composed of several smaller mirrors and can be seen from the kitchen—a clever method of maximizing the stunning sunset views over the preserve and the Gulf of Mexico beyond.
