Create a luxury single-family home that will blend into an historic Sarasota neighborhood, while making a modern-day statement—that was the builder’s goal for its new two-story 4,377-square-foot Camberdale model. Located in South Poinsettia Park, home to original 1920s bungalows, the architecture’s emphasis on linear forms and white façade nod to the famed Sarasota School style. It then takes a departure with aqua-painted Bimini shutters and brackets that lend an overall contemporary coastal aesthetic.
“This style of architecture is absolutely perfect for Sarasota,” explains builder Mark Wilson. “It’s timeless and makes sense to reference the beach, which is just minutes away.”
The Camberdale was designed specifically for its homesite, already punctuated by mature trees but requiring landscaping and architectural elements to enhance privacy in the pool area. Inside, the four-bedroom, four-bath home emphasizes an open-concept floor plan between great room, kitchen, and dining room. The space also demonstrates the homebuilder’s expertise in melding interior and outdoor spaces, even incorporating a sliding glass door in the master bathroom shower that opens to a garden shower.
Coastal-influenced interiors by designer Jennifer Stevens are subtle, alluded to through color, abstract art, and overall ambience rather than cliché references. Bright and saltbox whites, navy and marine blues, and contemporary shiplap-accented walls—rather than traditional bead-board—offer a unique spin on the theme. Lighting pendants, sconces, and even bathroom fixtures and drawer pulls command attention in aged brass and satin gold finishes.
“We also added some fun features—Kate Spade’s confetti wallpaper in a guest room, navy grasscloth in the study, and cobalt-blue terrazzo in a bathroom for a trip down memory lane,” says Stevens. “Dark wood furniture finishes create depth, and bold accent colors include deep shades of navy plus lime greens, peacock, coral and sea mist.”
Vine-woven walls and raised water features bring privacy to the expansive pool deck and covered living space, which offers dining and sitting areas and a fully equipped outdoor kitchen. “From concept to completion, we were committed to creating a unique lifestyle for the Sarasota market,” says Wilson. “This home is welcoming and inviting; people see themselves living here, entertaining friends or family or just hanging out by the pool.”
The contemporary coastal architecture and gray-white façade is accented by sterling-colored slate roof tile, vents and brackets painted Sherwin-Williams Mindful Gray, and Bimini shutters and grillwork featuring an aqua tone. Simple grids, carriage-style garage doors, and a trio of Eden Coast cedar double French doors emphasize both linear and vertical symmetry. The home features a state of the art home-automation system powered by Control 4, designed and installed by Elxai Home.
Stevens accents the great room’s TV wall with soft white slender shiplap for a coastal and contemporary look augmented by the mariner blue custom finish of the lattice front console. The rustic, time-worn surface of Bella Citta’s Cagliari random length plank European oak flooring recalls a cottage by the sea, while a cocktail table in saltbox white adds modern edges. Pieces by Vanguard Furniture include the Middlebury sofa accented by Jakarta lime throw pillows and a trio of ottomans upholstered in subdued flecked Worthy Kiwi. The table lamp introduces gilded gold; Robert Abbey’s Harlequin floor lamp introduces antique brass.
With its shades of tangerine, raspberry and aquas, the second-floor loft offers a vibrant yet calm destination to kick back. Offering ample seating, the loft features Precedent’s Ethan sofa with Cloud Nine Fog fabric, Bernhardt’s Clinton armchair upholstered in deep teal, and a trio of Precedent’s Elliot ottomans in Kravet’s Bacio Mandarin fabric by Jonathan Adler. Bernhardt’s Allegra tempered-glass and polished stainless steel end tables add a touch of airiness and shimmer.
The kitchen provides a white canvas for aqua, lime green and aged brass accents—the latter introduced in a trio of Hudson Valley Lambert pendants above the freestanding island and farm sink faucet. Shaker-style cabinetry in soft white is contrasted by the island’s gray painted finish and the stain of the European oak flooring. Pure white Pompeii quartz countertops are complemented by herringbone-patterned rectangular silver shadow marble backsplashes. Stainless steel WOLF appliances are from Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery. Stevens’ choice of Stanley’s Crestwood stools in saltbox white continues the study of gray and white, which she calls “fresh.”
As part of the free-flowing space shared between great room and kitchen, the dining room incorporates soft white shiplap above custom cabinetry with a wine refrigerator. Additional features include saltbox white finishes in the pedestal dining table and chairs, as well as aged brass in the Hudson Valley Junius chandelier. The simple form and vibrant Andrew Citron upholstered slip-covered host chairs are contrasted by the elaborate lattice backs of the guest chairs. Custom art introduces citron and yellow, and outdoor colors are displayed through sliding glass doors.
The rustic wood flooring continues into the master bedroom where its dark finish is paired with shades of grays and whites in furniture, fabrics, painted walls, and ceiling accents. Stevens selected Bernhardt’s tufted upholstered Drake bed, a pair of the company’s white bonded-leather Jet Set bachelor’s chests used as nightstands, and a flannel gray Saxon chaise with faux-fur pillows. Leftbank Art’s gold-framed triptych of yellow warblers above the bed infuses color into the setting, as do deep citron and navy bed pillows. French doors open to the spa.
Windows above Kohler’s contemporary freestanding white Reve tub and sliding glass doors in the walk-in shower fill the master bath with natural light. The room features silver shadow marble countertops, Calcutta extra-matte flooring and shower walls, and two dove-white vanities.
The outdoor space includes a kitchen, dining, and sitting area under the painted tongue-and-groove ceiling. The kitchen features white Macaubas vein-cut quartz countertops and shaker silver birch cabinetry. The dining table and matching armchairs are from Lane Venture. Woodard’s Bay Shore lounge chairs continue the gray-and-white combo with woven heather-gray frames and Impact Vapor White cushions. The chairs gather around Seasonal Living’s handmade lightweight concrete Zanzibar coffee table with an eco-friendly fire feature.
Three raised walls above a reflecting pool and the spa’s spillway fill the outdoor setting with the soundtrack of moving water. The water walls feature Silver Alabaster quartzite in shades of warm beige, bluegray and off-white with a subtle sparkle, which complement the spa waterline and spillway’s mosaic tile. The outdoor area channels the resort with white Ledge Lounger chaises, each with aquamarine pillows and white in-pool tables, perched on the sun shelf. Nearby, four Lane Venture Spector lounge chairs with Jamestown Lagoon striped cushions circle Seasonal Living’s ivory white Grand Louie oval coffee table.
