Pure Perfection

Minimal material selections are in keeping with the purist form of this Naples contemporary. Architect John Cooney used glass as the primary element. Bamboo Veined brushed natural stone cladding and clean white stucco are accented with marine grade stainless steel elements in the cantilevers, windows, and doors. The tongue-and-groove soffits are stained dark to complement the stainless features. A drive of Egyptian Grey hammered natural stone gives way to clean green turf which edges the stone water table of the house emphasizing the importance of the perimeter finish.

Creative master Leonardo da Vinci said, “simplicity is the ultimate sophistication” and this iconic contemporary estate, set on a 1 ½-acre lot on the highly desirable Naples waterfront, is a present day affirmation of that tenet of design. The owners first identified the idyllic location, then contacted Randy Kurtz of Kurtz Homes Naples who has completed multiple projects for other members of the family. “I met them at the site often in the beginning of the process. They knew what they wanted; to take advantage of the unobstructed, expansive water views and to create an indoor outdoor environment which realized their dream of having a Zen-like atmosphere while maintaining the clean, light, minimalistic elements of the home,” describes Kurtz.

The main living room depicts the homeowner’s minimalist interior design and accentuates the indoor outdoor connection. A sleek leather sectional is set atop a natural hide area rug. A Poliform Home Hotel coffee table is provided exclusively through Richlin International. Glass sliders fully pocket for seamless integration to the outdoor dining and living spaces. Select accessories provided by Republic of Décor.

The staircase with glass rail floats across the home’s large windows streaming light into multiple rooms. The steel substructure of the Z-stringer design built by Florida Stairworks is completely hidden through rich wood cladding. “The use of glass allows for the balustrade to disappear and the rail to have a floating appearance,” says Chris Adams of Florida Stairworks. “The stair really shows the precision of construction and is a perfect example of the entire home, clean, simple materials which blend together and the quality of the detail is perfect,” says Cooney. A wall of the same Bamboo Veined natural stone used on the home’s exterior further erases the indoor-outdoor boundaries.

The team of Randall Stofft and John Cooney of Stofft Cooney Architects collaborated on the architectural design to perfect and execute that vision, capitalizing on the firm’s east coast-west coast experience to create a one-of-a-kind contemporary. “The orientation and the size of the property played a very important role in the evolution of the design,” explains Cooney. “When you walk through this house there is extensive glass on almost every wall in every room, front and back. The goal was to create a very linear floorplan so the rooms could capitalize on morning and afternoon sun in the same room. From an architectural standpoint, the solids and voids that the planes create happen very easily and it is beautiful. The house is a very elaborate design even though it reads very simplistic and minimalistic in form.”

The homeowners did not sacrifice function for beauty in the home’s modern, bespoke kitchen. The Night Flight Matte Miralis Cabinetry island base is a rich contrast to the Miralis glossier white European-style perimeter from AlliKristé Custom Cabinetry & Kitchen Design. Cool metal accents are noted in the stools, hood vent, and Gessi Oxygene faucets provided through Richlin International. The suite of Gaggenau integrated appliances was supplied by Monark Premium Appliances.

The owners’ desires were also realized through the use of superior “green” materials and construction quality, as well as Kurtz Homes Naples’ attention to every last detail. “It is not just my business name but my personal name, Kurtz explains. “We take a limited number of jobs so that I and our team—project manager, superintendent, and estimator—are able to maintain the highest level of involvement and stay engaged in all stages of the project. Having a great and continuing relationship with the clients is as important to our team as it is to build a beautiful, quality home.” Cooney concurs, elaborating, “Because of the intricate design, if this home didn’t have the personal attention of the builder it would not show as flawlessly as it does.”

Bassano Parquet custom white oak flooring warms the simplistic beauty of the dining room space. A glass-topped table for ten is surrounded by sculptural Rolf Benz cantilevered black leather and chrome dining chairs, provided by Studio 2b. Thoughtfully chosen art plays on the room’s transparency, further drawing the outdoor greenery into the space.

Mirrors reflect the water view from the wall of windows in this VIP bath. Porcelanosa Oxo Line Blanco wall tile mimics the wave of the bay waters. A floating vanity with vessel sinks continues the contemporary design. Glass shower walls maintain the transparency and flow of natural light supplemented by a trio of blown glass pendants.

Attention to detail is evident in this magical powder bath. Water flows into a Lenovo glass vessel sink via the statement crescent moon-shaped Graff Luna wall mounted vessel filler faucet from Richlin International. A wall of custom painted aluminum art panels and mirrors provides a celestial feel, as does the cascading galaxy of glass pendants.

The result is masterful: spacious, sophisticated rooms flooded with natural light, surprising details revealed at every turn, and modern minimalist furnishings which bring a sense of calm to the home’s interior and allow the beauty of the architecture to present itself as the artwork of the home, both inside and out.

The expansive glass-walled office/media room is the result of careful discussion between client and the architectural-build team. The room needed to achieve privacy, but a solid wall would have darkened the room. “The glass wall turned out to be a major architectural feature continuing the flow of natural light from front to back of the home,” describes Cooney, who notes the room now benefits from the afternoon sun through the staircase windows.

A custom barn-door on rails secrets the cozy library. A sophisticated freestanding Poliform wall system, custom-made through Richlin International, accommodates the client’s collection of books and art. Glass LED-lit ghost boxes were incorporated to provide depth and dimension and create a focal point for beautiful statues and art pieces.

The covered living area set off the kitchen and family area provides an extension of the interior space. A modern weather-proof sectional and club chairs are positioned in front of a natural stone clad linear fireplace wall with large screen television. The summer kitchen is housed behind the wall. Two steps lead to a firepit and expansive backyard.

The master bath opens onto a private Zen courtyard, with meditation garden and spa. A sculptural freestanding tub positioned on a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows, and floating vanities of rich wood work to minimize the exterior walls. Integrated motorized blinds provide desired privacy.

The rectangular, glass tiled, junior-Olympic sized pool is an extremely fitting continuation of the exterior planes in the architecture of the home. The waveless perimeter is another thoughtfully designed—and difficult to execute—detail of the home, adding a clean sophistication to the minimalist backyard landscape. The extensive glass allows the interior lighting to illuminate the home both inside and out. With its natural beach and several hundred feet of waterfront, it is clearly evident why the contemporary refuge is the envy of every passing boater.
