Desiring a departure from the traditional look of his New Jersey home, the new owner of this Longboat Key condo gave husband-and-wife team Mike and Brittany Cocozza of Trinity Construction and Trinity Design, respectively, free rein over the renovation of the unit.
Along with Sarah Tenaglia, her Trinity Design business partner, Brittany honored her client’s request for “something completely different” by presenting a modern design infused with elements of warmth. “We used pieces that give a nod to the coastal location, without screaming ‘Hey! We’re at the beach!’” says Cocozza. “We kept things simple, clean, and streamlined, bringing in some color with rich blue hues. We didn’t want to add anything that would take away from the gulf-to-bay views.”
Using Benjamin Moore’s Shoreline, a neutral warm gray, to lend continuity throughout, the duo chose natural wood elements, customized furnishings, original designs, and added a few surprises. “We like to find things that are a little unexpected,” explains Cocozza.
A trio of Sabera mirrors from Uttermost — sandwiched between Hudson Valley sconces — hang above Sunpan’s leather, steel, and glass Mavis console table. Vinyl woven sisal wallcovering accents the geometric elements and angles of the decor in the private elevator-accessed entryway.
Chenille-covered sectional and accent chairs provide a comfortable gathering space in the living room. Behind the sectional stands a freeform silver-leafed resin console table from Phillips Collection. The Ava end table from Sunpan’s MIXT collection is sculpted from concrete and overlaid with a marble finish. Balancing the freeform pieces is a structured glass-topped Bernhardt coffee table with a gray-washed wooden base.
Book-matched quartz covers the counters and faces the backsplash in the kitchen. A recessed Wolf cooktop and sleek, glossy cabinets devoid of visual hardware add to the streamlined design. Bottom cabinets push to open, while a finger channel was built into the upper cabinets. A complementary walnut column houses the wall oven, microwave, and built-in espresso machine.
Subtle tone-on-tone vinyl woven sisal wallcovering from Phillip Jeffries in Dusty Gray covers the dining alcove back wall. A Belmont settee from Pasha Furniture is custom-upholstered in fabric featuring the deep blues and grays of the accent colors used throughout the condo. A pair of walnut-backed, leather-seated dining chairs on powder-coated aluminum frames skirt the glass-topped table illuminated by Craftmade’s chrome-finished Mira LED chandelier.
Custom-designed statement doors from Indigo Doors glide on a trackless system, resemble wall panels when seamlessly closed, and provide privacy to the small bedroom/den beyond. The custom-made solid wood gray-washed tabletop inlaid with polished oyster shells sits atop a cast stone base from Robert James. The seven chrome-finished arms of the Pinnacle LED chandelier from Craftmade can be moved into different configurations for an ever-changing look. A custom-made nine foot circular rug from Jaipur anchors the dining set.
Design Works Sarasota built the bar cabinet Cocozza designed in a high-gloss walnut finish. The back is faced with 12-by-24-inch tiles with a three-dimensional hexagon pattern. It rests on a waterfall base of book-matched quartz housing a wine refrigerator and ice maker. Cocozza explains bookmatching — matching two slabs of stone so that the adjoining surfaces mirror each other, like an open book. “The process takes a skilled fabricator,” she says.
Phillip Jeffries’ Wabi Sabi Walls is a collection of hand-laid raffia, created and then deconstructed and pieced together into something entirely new. Rendered here in Ivory Aesthetic, it is a naturally textured backdrop to the platform bed, smoothly upholstered in champagne leather. A walnut-stained media cabinet and Barcelona-style chair and ottoman in sienna brown add warmth to the bedroom’s neutral tones.
Combining two separate areas and choosing “the biggest tub we could get up the elevator,” the Trinity Design team created a feeling of openness using recessed lighting, a frameless glass shower enclosure with roll door, and a slender Prince Albert tub which fills from the ceiling. Covered with ½-inch wood-look tiles, a narrow ledge spanning the width of the tiled back wall adds warmth and dimension to the otherwise minimal environment.
The outdoor furnishings pictured here, and those found on the master bedroom lanai, are made to order from OW Lee’s Studio collection of all-aluminum furniture. Covered in a coastal blue and accented with Elaine Smith pillows, the furniture features OW Lee’s proprietary Flex Comfort™ system. Versatile and functional, the Aries coffee table from the Solterra collection by Sunpan is crafted from a natural concrete mix and is accented with silver foil.
