Southwest Florida : Home Tour : Artful Living

The Villa Sul Verde model home in the Talis Park community in Naples is a crowning jewel in ‘Fairgrove,’ the beautiful tree-lined neighborhood just beyond the front gates. Built and conceptualized by Iron Star Luxury Homes, this 3,500 square-foot model home has already won two Sand Dollar awards in the $1.75M to $2M category, one for Best Flooring and the other for its Interior Design. Iron Star, a boutique building company, led by Principal Laurie Tobin, is a preferred builder at Talis Park, and caters to its clients with in-house artisans and its own design center.

From the outside, this eclectic Spanish stucco structure with a clay barrel tile roof appears to have two stories because the central core of the home rises up over the handsome entry porch. The paved tile courtyard framed with indigenous plantings and an expansive, air-conditioned, three car garage creates grand curb appeal. Then inside, a light-filled great room commands the eye with its 26-foot floor-to-ceiling fireplace at one end and a spectacular counter-to-ceiling backsplash tile at the other.

One of the most dramatic features upon entering the home is the suspended, wood beam ceiling grid, featured in the central open floor plan. “The outdoor views are maximized by creating these volume ceilings and opening up as much space as possible to bring the outdoors in,” describes Tobin. With 90-degree pocketing doors, all the main living rooms open up to the outdoor spaces providing awe-inspiring entertainment experiences and uninterrupted views of the palm, coconut, and weeping hibiscus trees and the sprawling golf course beyond.

“When you walk through the ten-foot iron door, you see it right away, the grand dimensions of the living room,” says Rebekah Errett-Pikosky, designer at Clive Daniel Home and part of the design team on this project. “It’s not typical of Florida homes, so it really evokes a reaction.” Design partner, Charlie Hansen adds, “To me, the volume speaks volumes. There’s a true grandeur to this space, and that made it exciting to us.”

Hansen and Errett-Pikoksy chose a sophisticated, rich interior concept with a foundation in a unifying gray tone. From the flooring, to the variegated tile, to the painted walls and ceiling, to the weathered wood furniture, the recurring tones of gray anchor the design and are beautifully complemented by pops of chartreuse and heather blue.

“When this house was designed, it was intended to create a space that was ideal for entertaining and that framed this amazing vista which stretches on into perpetuity,” says developer John Hillman of Kitson Partners. “The vision was for a home owner who really wanted to entertain, both indoors and out,” adds Hillman.

The designers’ color scheme began with the dining room—its chartreuse striped seagrass wallpaper, in particular. “We selected that hue almost immediately,” Errett-Pikosky says. “It was so invigorating and fresh, with a beautiful texture that set a playful but contemporary tone for the rest of the house.” Armless light blue linen upholstered chairs encircle a glass-topped round table overlooking the front porch’s fossilized granite water feature. An oversized cantilevered light fixture crowns the room with a weathered-white accent.

The great room’s kitchen continues to take full advantage of its ceiling height, white cabinetry, and a Medieval scale hood range stretching to the upper windows. There are two quartz-topped islands; one made more functional for cooking with a deep sink, and the other stretching to a waterfall edge over upholstered saddle stools for snacking onlookers. The quartz and gray-wash cabinetry is echoed in the adjacent inset bar area. “We were able, because of the kitchen’s scale, to accommodate a full-size Sub-Zero refrigerator and freezer. It’s rare for a kitchen to have that,” Hansen says. The “low maintenance luxury” Pompeii Quartz can be just as beautiful as granite or marble, provided by United Materials, Inc. The best part is the fact that it is an extremely hard surface, non-porous, and doesn’t need to have additional sealer applied to it over time.

The yellow hue recurs in the most casual of the three bedrooms, where a custom-painted dresser mimics the coral scrollwork of the bed linens and a plush upholstered bed offers a cozy nesting spot. The entire home is wired for sound with speakers in every room, so music can be enjoyed throughout.

The master bedroom returns to the theme of serene grays and creams, another stately ceiling feature, and metallic seagrass wallpaper presiding over the sturdy but soft upholstery. The master bath is dominated by an oversize glass shower trimmed with bands of blue and teal glass tile and mosaic tile floor, and matching vanities with sea foam green cabinetry.

Living up to its name, the bonus room is a sprawling spread of high-style comfort. Ikat armchairs and an antique Chinese sideboard suggest global wanderings. The wall of wood panels interlocked with mirrored stripes and the trio of hanging glass pendants compliment the geometric ceiling pattern. Glass doors telescope ninety degrees, leading out to the arched lanai with a cozy, yet dramatic, stone fireplace—another prime space for lounging and dining.

The entertainment possibilities extend to the pool area with an outdoor kitchen featuring a Wolf grill and Sub-Zero refrigerator, a bubbling hot tub, and a pool with iridescent tile. The pool features a “fire and ice” theme, as the bowls of glass ‘ice’ flanking the pool actually become torches when lit. “The outdoor living space with this home is truly exceptional. The end result is that of a 5-Star resort,” concludes Tobin.
