The front elevation of this home incorporates island-style Bermuda shutters and lap siding with clean contemporary garage doors and horizontal cable railings, delivering a true coastal contemporary on this waterfront lot in Naples Moorings community.
Creativity, imagination, and a homeowner invested in every detail deliver the vision for this waterfront home on Outer Doctors Bay in Naples’ Moorings community. Situated on a pie-shaped lot, the coastal contemporary home conforms beautifully to the curve of the water’s edge, with views from nearly every room and interior design details envied by everyone who visits.
A grid-paneled smooth-troweled concrete plaster wall artistically finished by Christopher O’Guin of O’Guin Decorative Finishes is a unique living room backdrop to showcase several colorful pieces from the owner’s private art collection. “The mottling and random pitting of the cement finish gives it a natural, organic feel. It’s a great counterpoint to the surrounding smoother and more upscale surfaces,” notes O’Guin. Metal stanchions separate the layers the Ficarra-designed grid of floating wood beams centered on the outdoor space, adding to the symmetry. A neutral Hickory Chair sofa is flanked by a pair of Century end tables and Arteriors Home lamps. To the right Holly Hunt side chairs are upholstered in a Zimmer+Rohde fabric. A custom-designed gross grain oak cocktail table is banded with hammered metal accents.
“Everyone who walks into this home loves it. The interior designer really delivered the owner’s vision for his home,” says builder James Shannon Coleman of interior designer Lisa Ficarra, founder of Ficarra Design Associates.
Dual kitchen islands are topped with leather-finished Madreperola Quartzite. A trio of Hammerton Studio pendants light the waterfall-edged entertainment island fitted with ivory leather Holly Hunt counter stools. Ruffino Cabinetry wire brushed oak finished cabinetry is accented with metal detail on the hood and upper glass-doored cabinets. A multi-toned ceramic tile in shades of gray set on the horizontal complements the metal hood and stainless steel appliances from Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery.
A 2,000-bottle climatized wine room houses the clients’ prized collection of fine wines. Storage includes custom high reveal display rows, bulk diamond bins, and case storage. The feature fills a space which would traditionally house a butler’s pantry.
The owner wanted a designer with the ability and interest in custom interior architectural detailing and was referred to Ficarra by one of her previous clients. Collectively they established the look he desired. “He has a wonderful design sense; he gravitates towards more contemporary, architectural designs. He explained that he wanted something different than anything he had seen in Naples.”
“Lisa and her team led me through a massive number of decisions in an organized but creative process, listening carefully to my preferences, and then offering recommendations based on a great sense of design and style,” praises the homeowner.
Crisp and clean in its design, the master bathroom is enhanced with a custom textured metal wall treatment. Ruben Sorhegui Tile Calacatta Gold honed Italian marble is used on the floor and shower floor with custom size Calacatta Gold Waterjet Mosaic marble on the shower walls. Dual vanities designed by Ruffino Cabinetry with cabinetry-framed custom mirrors are illuminated by Cerno Lighting sconces and the Hubbardton Forge natural iron Aura Pendant overhead.
A generous master bedroom in cool neutrals, grays and blues is warmed by the home’s custom stained wide plank oak flooring. A Swaim king bed atop a Kravet hand-knotted area rug is dressed in Ficarra designed custom bedding. Modern Fan Company’s contemporary ceiling fan hangs from the beamed ceiling detail. The seating area is outfitted with a pair of ivory upholstered Swaim arm chairs and a Hickory Chair ottoman. The simple, elegant furnishings are enhanced by the sculptures and paintings from the client’s art collection.
Ficarra’s interior design embellishes upon the custom home plan by architect Tony Boyatt which allows for a flood of natural light, angled rooflines, and the use of glass to capture long views from each living space. “This is what can result if you allow your imagination to be opened up and you utilize the lot itself,” explains Boyatt. “You literally have to think outside of the box, beyond the traditional square idea of a what a home should be and not limit the possibilities.”
Subtle design elements distinguish the home’s interior, such as an inlaid limestone border in the foyer, brushed stainless steel, grass cloth, and various metals. “We began in the living room, designing a custom focal wall with panels of textured concrete as a backdrop for my client’s colorful artwork and a baby grand piano,” describes Ficarra. “I created a floating wood beamed ceiling with metal stanchions in the living room and carried it into the kitchen. The use of wood and natural materials is very important in the design. In the furnishings the owner gravitated toward neutrals, textures, grays, and off whites.” The owner’s personal art collection adds the color and a special uniqueness to the interior design.
Breaking from the home’s neutral color palette, Phillip Jeffries Blur Turquoise wallcovering adds playfulness and an artistic splash to this teen bedroom with Ficarra designed bedding.
O’Guin Decorative Finishes executed a Ficarra-designed combed horizontal plaster with champagne and silver metallic glazes on the walls of this stunning powder bath. The soft ribs and gentle sheen pick up the veining in the Ruben Sorhegui marble flooring and the vanity top. Hubbardton Forge sconces flank an edgy metal-finished mirror.
The library is outfitted with comfortable Century leather swivel chairs and a generously sized Vanguard Furniture leather ottoman. A custom Ruffino Cabinetry wall unit houses the client’s book collection and works of art. Hartmann & Forbes men’s tweed-like grasscloth wallcovering adds a masculine texture to the walls.
Builder Coleman has worked closely with architect Boyatt for 35 years, building hundreds of homes. He says despite delays from Hurricane Irma, the ease of communication with both Boyatt and Ficarra allowed for the home’s on-time delivery. “Tony is incredibly responsive and Lisa gave us phenomenal plans for her designs. We were able to communicate and execute the detailing throughout the home so well that it was a pleasure to create.”
The architectural design of the quartet of Link Outdoor club chairs and the sculptural form of the Phillips Collection glass-topped cocktail table appealed to the owner’s artistic eye. The outdoor living area overlooks the infinity-edge pool and shimmering lights on Outer Doctors Bay.
The infinity-edge lap pool follows the curve of the waterfront lot, creating a dramatic centerpiece to the outdoor deck topped in 12-by-24-inch brushed shellstone from Ruben Sorhegui Tile. Steps lead from the dock to comfortable Kannoa club chairs surrounding the firepit. Architect Boyatt explains that by limiting the size of the upstairs balcony he was able to extend outward the two bedrooms on either side to enjoy greater views of the water.
