“The Home & Design Magazine 2019 Signature Home™, located in the quaint neighborhood of The Moorings, thoughtfully melds tradition and trends through innovative architecture and interior design elements,” says Jennifer Evans, president and publisher of Home & Design. With the help of Emilio Sadez, president of International Design Source (IDS), Home & Design brought together a masterful team of local and national design professionals, including Naples interior designer Carleen Young of Ashmore Design and renowned designer Barclay Butera, to produce a glamorous coastal-chic design.
The highly anticipated annual project is the result of many months planning, dedication, and expertise from Southwest Florida’s best-of-the-best in building and home furnishings. “We noticed a gradual shift from primarily contemporary to more traditional design elements over the past few years,” says Sadez. “Inevitably, the 2019 Signature Home™ perfectly defines traditional design for the Southwest Florida market.”
“When I first drove up to the house it was a jaw-dropping experience–what a stunner!” says Butera. “I love the way Carleen took inspiration from my signature style, and then put her personal twist on it, incorporating my collections from Lexington Home Brands and other licensees. It was incredibly chic. I am so honored to be part of this prestigious project.”
Andrea Douglas, ASLA, landscape architect with Outside Productions International, collaborated closely with Carleen Young to enhance the coastal chic feel of the home. The plant material Douglas selected is tropical, but with a manicured and simple look to compliment the architecture. The pool design at the back of the home is contemporary with areas of interest from every window, inviting the homeowners to enjoy the outdoor living area. “As always, our goal is to create connectivity between indoor and outdoor living,” says Douglas.
Furnishings from the Barclay Butera Newport collection with Lexington Home Brands illustrate a twist on traditional design. Drawing inspiration from the relaxed yet sophisticated lifestyle of the coast, the furnishings fit perfectly into the 2019 Signature Home’s™ transitional-coastal meets fashion-forward farmhouse design.
Young recalls first catching a glimpse of Butera’s introductory collections with Lexington Home Brands while working from one of International Design Source’s eight full-service to-the-trade showrooms.
“I was talking with Emilio Sadez about new trends in the interior design market,” explains Young, “He showed me a preview of what Lexington was launching with Barclay Butera, and I knew it would be a perfect fit for our market!”
“The creative team at Lexington, the incredible talent of Barclay, and the optimism and energy of Carleen was fun to watch,” adds Sadez. “IDS was in charge of ‘keeping the ball rolling’ in terms of logistics.”
A mindful mix of materials and finishes sets the project apart from other homes in its location, just minutes from downtown, the beach, and Old Naples. White cabinets and warm woods complemented by blue, black, and honey-bronze finishes invite you into the heart of the home.
“The home’s space planning makes all areas very accessible, with no waste of space,” explains Ashmore Design founder Rod Ashmore. “There are minimal hallways, and we focused on maximizing the entertaining areas. The great room’s corner sliding glass doors seamlessly extend the interior to a very large and functional outdoor living space. The home showcases an abundance of natural light, yet is designed to be energy efficient, and is built above Florida code standards.”
Brilliant white walls and open spaces in the home are the hallmarks of the architectural design. An open catwalk allows for a bird’s-eye view of the design elements on the first floor: the study’s Antique Egyptian barn doors, the outdoor dining table made of wood elements salvaged from the iconic fig tree at the Edison and Ford Winter Estates, and white oak flooring.
As intended, and just as Barclay Butera experienced himself, the home’s glamorous coastal-chic design spoke to its new owners the moment they walked through the front door. Ashmore gushes, “The homeowners stood in shock right in the foyer and said, ‘It’s like they knew me!'”
A custom metal front door flanked by two statuesque palms invites guests into the 2019 Signature Home™ located just minutes from the Gulf of Mexico and downtown Naples. Landscape architect Andrea Douglas of Outside Productions International created a circular drive of pavers providing easy access to the split garages and ample parking for this family-friendly retreat. Due to the home’s close proximity to the beach, Ashmore Design selected a durable aluminum standing-seam roof.
“The Newport Collection is extremely fresh and fashionable at the same time; and it has timeless appeal, making it the perfect choice for the discerning clientele of Naples and across all upscale regions of Florida as well.” – Barclay Butera
Designer Carleen Young custom designed the fireplace wall in the purest white with a light-oak mantle to complement the European Oak flooring. The clean backgrounds accentuate the bold optimistic “Barclay Blues” from the Barclay Butera Newport Collection with Lexington Home Brands from International Design Source.
A showcase of creativity, the kitchen incorporates a deep blue hood and cabinetry over white base cabinets with aged-brass accents for a coastal farmhouse vibe. The custom white-oak topped working island adds to the all-American appeal. The Jeffrey Court tile backsplash from Design Works continues the fresh aesthetic. Three Hudson Valley pendant lights from Lighting First shimmer over the wider entertaining island with seating on Newport collection stools. The Brizo sink faucets and a suite of Wolf Sub-Zero appliances are from Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery. A clever chalkboard barn door helps to organize a busy family’s schedule while keeping the pantry out of sight.
Reclaimed 19th century Egyptian doors, stripped and refinished, lead to the comfortable study. The white oak beams and flooring work together with the Lexington Home Brands Los Altos collection desk and chair from International Design Source to create a cozy place to work or read. The accent wall is clad in Barclay Butera wallcovering from Winfield Thybony.
The deep blue hue of the Bayside buffet held the inspiration for Ashmore Design’s cabinetry selection in the nearby kitchen. “My goal was to find a way to utilize and interpret Barclay’s collections by incorporating my own twists that allow his beautiful style to translate well in a lived-in home,” says Young. The art piece, Temptest, is from Butera’s collection with Leftbank Art from International Design Source. A 20-bulb aged brass Capital Lighting chandelier from Lighting First illuminates the Oceanside dining table without detracting from the picturesque view of the outdoors. The lanai dining area features a table crafted from the slab of a Mysore Fig Tree from the Edison & Ford Winter Estates fallen during Hurricane Irma.
Warm wood cabinetry contrasts the black tub, and Silestone Calcutta Gold countertops. The Newport collection vanity mirrors are from International Design Source. Aged brass Brizio fixtures were supplied by Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery. Here and throughout the design, these elements bring a new perspective through a fusion of modern farmhouse and classic coastal styles.
The master bath’s bold, black freestanding Jacuzzi tub is set against the natural greenery and delicate Mir Mosaic flooring from Design Works. The Hudson Valley beaded steel chandelier suspended from the vaulted ceiling is from Lighting First.
The master bedroom features a mélange of Butera’s Kravet, GP & J Baker, and Vervain fabrics from International Design Source set against the warm woods of the Newport Collection. Art pieces are from Leftbank Art’s Barclay Butera collection. A private entrance leads to the expansive outdoor pool area and sundeck designed by Andrea Douglas of Outside Productions International.
The spacious second story guest suite opens to a balcony with Cypress Point Ocean Terrace by Tommy Bahama Outdoor seating in a vibrant teal for sunny days and western sunset views. The Newport Crystal Cove Upholstered Panel Bed is dressed in Barclay’s Eastern Accent’s Summerhouse collection from International Design Source.
The light and airy loft area complete with coffee (or cocktail) bar is situated between two guest suites overlooking the great room. Cozy window seats flank the shiplap accent wall. Art work, Aquamarine I-IV is from Barclay Butera’s Leftbank Art collection.
The outdoor living has multiple entertaining areas with several fire and water features. “The back yard features a water feature fire bowl off the main living area, water scuppers into the spa viewed from the master bedroom, and an outdoor fire pit,” notes Andrea Douglas of Outside Productions International. An elevated sun shelf–furnished with two Barclay Butera for Castelle chaises from International Design Source–overlooks the spa and pool. Floors In Style provided a stylish wood-look tile backslash for the outdoor barbecue situated next to the lanai dining table with seating for eight.
The outdoor living room is furnished with the Tommy Bahama Cypress Cove collection from International Design Source. Ashmore Design continued the beamed ceilings in this covered space. Young selected ice white sand blasted pavers to continue the home’s crisp look across the outdoor living space and pool deck. The television wall is accented by Hubberton Forge outdoor sconces designed for the elements.
